The newest sculpture along Laurelwood Arboretum’s Sculpture Trail is Allonge by Robert Koch. The 8’ x 7” x 10” milled steel work replaces Koch’s Ferrous Couture, which was recently sold. Allonge was installed in the same location at site #1 overlooking Laurel Pond. The sculpture was inspired by organic movements found in nature.
Growing up in Pennsylvania, Koch’s interest in art started at an early age. He attended Kutztown University, where he studied art education. Over the course of nearly 20 years, he created functional stoneware pottery. In 2000, he attended a metal sculpting class at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and knew immediately that this was his calling. In 2004, he moved to the New York area and established Robert Koch Studios as an artist working solely on steel sculpture.
A Sculpture Trail, a multiyear project that showcases unique works of art in the arboretum’s natural setting, is sponsored by Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum. Scott A. Broadfoot of the Broadfoot & Broadfoot gallery in Boonton, New Jersey is the curator. All sculptures in A Sculpture Trail are available for purchase, with a percentage of the proceeds donated to the Friends organization to be applied towards capital improvements.
