New Sculpture Trail Installation At Laurelwood Arboretum

As if in anticipation of the whiteness of winter, a new sculpture is now on view on the right side of Brook Road at Laurelwood Arboretum.  Up and Away by Elaine Lorenz is a brilliantly white 74” x 33” x 14” work fashioned from fiber-reinforced cement.

“In a world filled with disorder and clamor of people and machinery, I find refuge and balance by experiencing the power and beauty in the natural world,” said Lorenz.  “The creation of Up and Away involved combining organic and geometric forms to produce a lively and upbeat sculpture.  My sculptures balance mass and space, creating gradients of light, points of intersection or interior spaces.”

Lorenz is Professor Emeritus at William Paterson University in Wayne, where she taught sculpture and ceramic sculpture.  A graduate of Marietta College in  Ohio, she received a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.  She worked as an artist in the point-of sales display and graphic design industries and also taught sculpture in adult education classes, art centers and museum educational programs.

Lorenz’s work has been included in numerous exhibitions and sculpture sites throughout the United States.  Among them are the Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, NY;  The Fredonia Sculpture Project, Fredonia, NY;  Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, Wisconsin; Knoxville Museum, Knoxville, TN; The Hunterdon, Morris, Newark and Montclair Museums, NJ;  Fine Arts Museum of Long Island, Hempstead;  and the International Sculpture Center, Washington, DC.  Her sculptures are also in private, public and corporate collections around the country.

A Sculpture Trail, a multiyear project that showcases unique works of art in the arboretum’s natural setting, is sponsored by Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum.  A Sculpture Trail is curated by Scott A. Broadfoot of the Broadfoot & Broadfoot gallery in Boonton, New Jersey.  All sculptures in A Sculpture Trail are available for purchase, with a percentage of the proceeds donated to the Friends organization to be applied towards capital improvements.  To follow A Sculpture Trail on Instagram go to https://www.instagram.com/laurelwoodsculpturetrl/
