Learn All About Nature’s Pollinators At Bees and Butterflies Day at Laurelwood

Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum will welcome families to a free Bees and Butterflies Day on Sunday, August 4th from 12:30 to 4 pm at Laurelwood Arboretum, 725 Pines Lake Drive West in Wayne.

From 12:30 to 1:30 pm, Jim LaConte will present a film, “Bees — Tales from the Hive.” It features up-close footage of a working bee colony filmed with specially-developed macro lenses. He will follow this fascinating presentation with a talk about the intricate workings of a managed colony.

LaConte is a member of the Northeast New Jersey Beekeepers Club and has been a beekeeper for four years. He is a Wayne resident and a retired Wayne Police Officer. Honey from his Pines Lake bee farm will be available for tasting.

Butterfly events will follow from 2 pm to 4 pm. There will be live displays of butterfly eggs, caterpillars and chrysalises. There will also be information about the life cycle of butterflies and how to attract butterflies in home gardens and crafts for children.
