Aquilegia canadensis – Sporting beautiful and unusual flowers, wild columbine (Eastern columbine), is an important source of nectar because of its early spring blooms, feeding pollinators and hummingbirds. There are many columbines out there, however, only the red-and-yellow blooming Eastern columbine is native to NJ. Usually growing about 2-feet tall, sometimes its flowers can be held even higher than that about its basal leaves. It is also the host plant for the Columbine duskywing. It can grow in full sun to partial shade, has a long period of bloom and is adaptable to various soil types. It is drought tolerant.
