Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum will host a Rhododendron Festival on May 14 and 15 at 725 Pines Lake Road in Wayne.  “Rhododendrons are Laurelwood’s signature plant.  Seeing the more than 100 varieties in bloom throughout the arboretum is one of the year’s most memorable experiences,” said Joseph Di Giacomo, Master Gardener and Chairperson of Laurelwood’s Rhododendron Study Team.  “Our rhododendron collection includes more than 400 named hybrids and species, many of which were raised and planted decades ago by John and Dorothy Knippenberg, who established the arboretum.”                                   

During the two-day festival, visitors can enjoy peaceful walks surrounded by majestic flowers and guided tours to learn more about the rhododendron collection.  Free guided Rhododendron Collection walking tours are scheduled for Saturday, May 14 at 10 am and Sunday, May 15 at 10 am led by Di Giacomo, who has selected the most spectacular spots for viewing the rhododendrons in bloom.  Additionally, participants will learn about the Knippenberg legacy of rhododendrons.  To join a tour, meet at the pavilion next to the Knippenberg Center for Education.  For those who prefer not to walk, motorized carts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

On Saturday at 2 pm, Di Giacomo will conduct a free workshop on propagating rhododendrons at home from stem cuttings.  It is limited to 20 participants, and advance registration is required.  To register, go to www.laurelwoodarboretum.org .
