Prabha Sahasrabudhe to Exhibit at Laurelwood Arboretum

Prabha Sahasrabudhe“Paintings at the Turn of the Century,” an exhibit of recent works by artist, art teacher and art educator Prabha Sahasrabudhe, PhD, will be on display at the Knippenberg Center for Education at Laurelwood Arboretum, 725 Pines Lake Drive West in Wayne, from September 10 through October 22. The exhibit is sponsored by Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum as part of its ongoing ArtWorks program featuring works by local artists.

On Sunday, September 10, from 2 to 4 pm, Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum will host an artist’s reception at the Knippenberg Center. Dr. Sahasrabudhe will be on hand to greet visitors and talk about his work. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

The exhibit will present paintings produced by Dr. Sahasrabudhe during the past eighteen years, 1999 through 2017. “Making art and teaching about art and art making is what I do,” said Dr. Sahasrabudhe, who will be 90 years of age in January 2018. “I am very grateful for this gesture of recognition and for the opportunity to present my work at the Knippenberg Center for Education.

Dr. Sahasrabudhe, a resident of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, is a retired Professor of Art and Art Education at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. He is currently the honorary Director/Secretary of the Center for International Art Education, Inc. His career in art education began in 1955 with a Fulbright Scholarship, which brought him to the United States from India. He earned a Master of Arts Degree from New York University in 1956 and a PhD in Art Education in 1961. He then returned to India as Director of the Bal Bhavan and National Children’s Museum in New Delhi. 

In 1967, Dr. Sahasrabudhe returned the United States to join the New York University Art Education Department as an Assistant Professor. From 1974 to 1991 he was Director of the Arts and Music Programs of the Middle Country School District on Long Island. He then joined the faculty of Columbia University Teachers College from 1991 to 2002. After his retirement from teaching, Dr. Sahasrabudhe became the Director/Secretary of the Center for International Art Education. In 2003, he was awarded the Ziegfeld Award for Distinguished Contributions to International Art Education. In retirement, he continues to paint and is also a dedicated volunteer at Laurelwood Arboretum.
