Fall is here!

Fall is one of the best times to visit the arboretum. The Sensory Garden is in its glory for the next week or so and will then be put to bed until spring. Other good spots are sitting on a bench in the South Rock Garden and listening to the migrating birds. Or sit by the pond with the soothing fountains. On the far side of the pond, you’ll find a beautiful new stainless-steel sculpture by Babette Bloch.

Inside the Knippenberg Center for Education is an exhibit of exquisite photos by Glen Roger Evans. Anytime is a good time to be in the arboretum and Fall is one of the best times! Enjoy.

The arboretum is open every day 8:00 AM to dusk,
weather permitting.

There are 7 pedestrian gates that are always unlocked.
The most commonly used are located on Home Hill to the right
of the Knippenberg Center and on Long Valley Road
near the exit from the Pines Lake Drive West parking lot.

Come join the fall bird walks!

“Great group of birders today at Laurelwood Arboretum for the first fall bird walk! We saw a red-eyed vireo (several juveniles), a male and female common yellowthroat, ruby-crowned kinglets, in addition to 14 of our year-round residents! Thank you to the Ramapo student who pointed out the vireo! Come join us on a bird walk this fall!”

Pavilion Spruce Up!

The pavilion has a new look with newly stained posts and painted picnic table. An energetic and focused group of Laurelwood volunteers enhanced the look of the pavilion and had fun too!

Picnicking and eating is not permitted within the arboretum. Visitors may only eat at the pavilion located alongside the Knippenberg Center for Education.

In Memory of Dr. Edith Wallace

Dr. Edith Wallace, educator, Master Gardener, volunteer and longtime supporter of Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum died recently. Her contributions to Laurelwood were many. She helped create our first Native Plant Demonstration Garden, consulted on our lilac collection and tree brochures, was a featured speaker at educational programs and supported our organization financially.

Dr. Wallace had a lifelong passion for gardening and horticulture. She earned a Ph.D. in zoology at Rutgers University and was chair of the Biology Department at William Paterson University for 28 years. After giving up grading papers and exams. she became a student again and took courses at Bergen Community College and at the New York Botanical Garden, earning certificates in field botany, plant classification, and ornamental horticulture.  Dr. Wallace graduated in the first Passaic County Rutgers Master Gardener program in 1996.

She was honored with the Rutgers Co-operative Extension Award of Excellence in 2012 for her work writing 13 Fact Sheets, volunteering on the Help Line and volunteering more than 4,000 hours in 15 years. One year later, she received the Volunteer of the Year award from the New Jersey Botanical Gardens. Known affectionately as the “Lilac Lady,” she helped photograph and maintain the extensive lilac collection at Skylands and gave many lilac garden tours and lectures.

A perennial volunteer, she served as president of the Glen Rock Garden Club, president of Passaic County Master Gardeners, coordinator of the Lilac Garden Restoration Project at Skylands, member of the Garden State Garden Consortium, and member of the Board of Managers of the New Jersey Agriculture Experimental Station and the Passaic County Board of Agriculture. A life well lived. We will miss you Edith.

Are Beech Trees in Trouble!

Beech leaf disease is a disease that impacts American beech and several other species of beech. It is caused by a nematode, Litylenchus crenatae ssp. mccannii. It damages leaf buds which leads to leaf loss, canopy thinning, and aborted buds. Beech leaf disease has killed a large number of beech in the eastern United States and is increasing in both the severity and spread. In yard trees, there are several treatment methods, however, it should be noted that these are expensive and research is still underway. In a forest setting, this treatment is expensive and typically not feasible. With beech leaf disease and beech bark disease on the landscape, American beech is imperiled.  Penn State Extension
