Reflecting Pond Restoration

Ariella Chapnik ( 2nd from left ) and friends.

Ariella Chapnik, an Eagle Scout candidate, organized and led the first phase of restoring the reflecting pool of the South Rock Garden at the arboretum. The scouts worked for two days removing rocks and shoveling out the silt from the pool. The silt was then redistributed in parts of the garden that will receive plantings in the fall. The project will also include the rebuilding of the rock embankment and adding a sound feature to the brook.

Lakeland Regional High School Visit

Lakeland Regional High School Students with their teacher Karen McCormack
(women kneeling on left).

On July 2, a Lakeland Regional High School group walked the arboretum. For the past several summers the class has enjoyed this annual visit. The smiles show that once again they had a wonderful time!

GreenQuest Nature Club

On June 25, GreenQuest Nature Club leaders Avni and Sophia
presented a class on ants. After a PowerPoint presentation, the
participants made paper ants, showing the parts of the head, thorax,
abdomen, 6 legs, and 2 antennae. They then walked in the arboretum
to find many species of ants, ranging from tiny pavement ants tvery large carpenter ants.

GreenQuest is a free monthly program for children 2nd-6th grades given by Wayne Hills High School students. All participating children must be accompanied by an adult.

The next program on September 24, will feature farm animals.

Volunteer News

Au Revoir
Lourdes Osorio

We bid a fond farewell to Lourdes Osorio, who is moving to Virginia due to her husband’s job transfer. For a little less than two years, she has been a Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum staff member as Director of Education, Programs and Events. She planned and organized many interesting programs, while continuing to work as a volunteer at Laurelwood’s Welcome Garden and Native Habitat Garden.

Lourdes has been a dedicated Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum board member and volunteer for many years. She is a Rutgers Certified Master Gardener and is also the creator of Native Plant Channel on YouTube, an educational channel about all aspects of gardening and New Jersey’s native plants.

Garden State Gardens Consortium

Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum has been a member of the GSGC since its inception in 2007. The organization supports and promotes New Jersey’s finest gardens and arboretums. New Jersey truly is the ‘Garden State’ with many exceptional public gardens, with most an easy drive for a day trip.

The GSGC website gardenstategardens.org  has information and links to the 29 gardens and a social media presence with additional information about current activities and plant sales.

For avid garden lovers, the organization has developed a passport. Visit all the gardens, have the garden section stamped or verified in the passport by the garden and after visiting all, send it in for a prize! Click here to download or print the passport.
