High School Students Learn How to
‘Rock the World with Native Plants’

Students from Wayne Hills High School, Wayne Valley High School and Passaic County Technical Institute attended a free program at Laurelwood Arboretum where they learned how to “rock the world with native plants.” Lourdes Osorio, Laurelwood’s Director of Education and the arboretum’s Native Plant Manager, explained how the loss of birds, pollinators and other insects impacts our world and how native plants can help mitigate the effects.

The students who attended are leaders involved with environmental organizations such as GreenQuest, Green Club, and Wayne Grounded at their schools. In addition to learning about what they can do to help improve our environment, they had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with each other. They also learned about careers in horticulture. “We plan to continue to reach out to young people in our community with programs such as this,” said Osorio. “This is part of our mission to provide opportunities for environmental awareness through educational programs, community involvement and outreach activities.”
